Old Business:  None

New Business:

Adjutant Webster outlined the dues SNAFU with the Department Headquarters, providing the wrong Post Mailing address as 4 May Street, North Providence.  Also the incorrect stated dues amount of $25.00.  The address of Providence Post 1, American Legion of RI is P.O. Box 40461-0461.  The dues amount owed by each member for 2008 is $30.00.  The department of RI forwarded all checks received to Post 1, however many were in the incorrect amount of $25.00 and the Finance Officer has a list of who still must pay the extra $5.00 to receive their 2008 membership card. Comrade Thomas Rotella stated that he sent in his check for $25.00 and marked it dues payment for 2008, and felt that the post should not have cashed it or it was accepting the payment as such for dues year 2008.  The Adjutant explained that the dues of $30.00 dollars was approved last year as the amount of dues for 2008 and members know that they are liable for that amount and must pay the additional $5.00, even if it was stated in error by National Headquarters for whatever reason.

Comrade Lenny O. DiLeone stated he could help with a Fundraiser activity from the Portsmouth Lions, as a celebrity event.  Comrade DiLeone is affiliated with them and can arrange something.  Comrade Blade suggested that we should establish a Fundraising Committee to accomplish that tasking.  Commander Torrice asked for a motion that we have such a committee, which was made and seconded to establish it.  The commander will appoint the committee at the next meeting in October.

Commander Torrice sent out a survey on meetings for all to reply with their assessment and view of what should be accomplished to keep us fiscally sound with upcoming meetings and dinners.  Today’s escalating prices are much more exuberant with regard to cost factors and must be accomplished with an austere budget that must be balanced.  He will report the results of the survey and his intent at the October meeting.

Correspondence:

Comrade Adjutant read a Letter from the Down’s syndrome Society for our donation in Memory of Comrade Rivard.

Anything for the good of the American Legion to be reported:

The next meeting will be held on the 16th of October most likely again here at the VFW due to fiscal concerns based on the increased numbers of members attending the meetings.  Commander Torrice cautioned that the treasury is low, around $800.00 even though the checking account indicates a balance of some $3,000 dollars, we still must pay our National and State dues out of that.  The web site and the meeting announcement will inform all of the meeting location for October.

In view of the fact that there was no further business to be conducted Comrade Commander Torrice asked that the closing prayer be provided by Comrade (Acting Chaplain) Phil Philibert.  The meeting was adjourned at 8:59 P. M. with the hand salute.
